Author of Uncle Remus stories:
A native of Eatonton, Georgia, Joel Chandler Harris (1848-1908) gained fame a century ago as the writer of children's stories, told in dialect by character Uncle Remus.  Harris, of illegitimate birth, suffered pangs of shyness and stuttering.  He befriended elderly slaves who entertained him with trickster tales about Brer Rabbit and Brer Fox and the other critters in the Briar Patch.  Later, turned journalist, Harris compiled and wrote the Uncle Remus tales,  and wrote other stories filled with an even darker side to slavery that epitomized the tragedy and realism of the age in which he lived. The writer understood more of humanity and the world because of personal circumstances, which enabled him to relate to those whom society deemed less fortunate.
